My story isn’t anything extraordinary or remarkable, but I think some people might appreciate this small moment of connection with nature.

I don’t know if it will warm other people’s hearts, but it certainly touched mine in an unexpected way.

More often than not, I see young people experiencing homelessness on our streets while I’m going to and from work. The ones I see rarely have signs asking for help, and their pets are usually in better shape than themselves.

In 2005, I lived in Houston, Texas and had an opportunity, along with most of the rest of the city, to help with the Hurricane Katrina evacuees. I spent weeks getting up every morning at 3AM and heading to the Astrodome complex or GRW convention center to volunteer.

A few weeks ago I went to a Burger King in an unfamiliar suburb of Chicago. The woman in charge was severely understaffed—it was just herself and a new hire. She was absolutely overwhelmed… I was actually concerned for her wellbeing, as she seemed on the verge of exhaustion.

I was doing FOH (Front of house, sound engineering) at a charity gig in the Millennium Arena, Battersea Park London for cancer research a few years ago.

Back when I was a renter, I lived next to this really grumpy, seemingly unpleasant older lady. She would never say hello in the hallways (either pretending not to know me or just grumbling something under her breath). One time she even threw my clothes on the floor in the laundry room because she needed to use the machine.

This is just a little thing, but I remember it very clearly and it was incredibly meaningful to me.
